An Open Letter to Citizen Bush

Dear President Bush,
As a new leader assumes the reigns of
government, it seems a prudent time to pause a moment and reflect upon
what has transpired over the last eight years. It was a time of peace
shattered by acts of despicable cowardice. It was a time of great
adversity tempered with the satisfaction of quiet victories. It was a
time of great economic expansion and unexpected losses. There has been
much conjecture on how posterity will judge your time in office. Many
have claimed that history will be your harshest critic. But how, I
wonder, could any critic be harsher than the media that sought your
destruction?
To be sure, Mr. President, I too have
at times been critical of your administration. But, I have not, nor
could not, be critical of your unflinching resolve and steely
determination in the face of our enemies. You have had the unpleasant
duty of hearing daily reminders of the tremendous, very real, threats
to our freedom and way of life. Yet, despite this, remained calm and
collected. Through your determination, and watchful eye, you protected
us all.
There is little doubt that September
11th will play a great role in defining your presidency. When you stood
on the rubble of Ground Zero, and said, “I can hear you. The rest of
the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down
will hear all of us soon.” I sat, watching, proud of my president and
my country. Then, just a few days later, on September 20th, as you
address a joint session of Congress and the rest of the world, you said:
Our response involves far more than instant retaliation
and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a
lengthy campaign unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include
dramatic strikes visible on TV and covert operations secret even in
success.
We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another,
drive them from place to place until there is no refuge or no rest.
And we will pursue nations that provide aid or safe haven to terrorism.
Every nation in every region now has a decision to make: Either you are
with us, or you are with the terrorists.
I have been proud of your unflinching
belief in the strength, determination, and perseverance of the American
people. I thank you for your unfailing optimism in the face of great
adversity. I appreciate your courage of character, and spirit of public
service.
Now, as we trust the wheel of
government to a new President, may you shed the burden of public
responsibility and enjoy the fruits of the security you helped create.
Thank you for all you’ve done, Mr. President.
